FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Michigan Muslims Raise Funds for Haiti

(Bloomfield Hills, MI 2-7-10) – The Islamic Shura Council of Michigan organized a state wide fundraising effort for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti in which estimates say over one hundred thousand people have died and many more injured. Michigan mosques where asked to donate to the Islamic Shura Council of Michigan's Haiti Earthquake Relief fund by asking that portions of the Friday collections after the weekly Friday prayer be given towards the Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund.

Many mosques have responded and the Southeastern Michigan Muslim community were able to raise approximately $65,000 dollars for the Haiti Earthquake relief effort. Mouhib Ayas, president of the Islamic Shura Council of Michigan (ISCOM) said that, "helping those in need is a fundamental aspect of Islam, no matter the race or religion of the recipient of the help. We’re only fulfilling our religious obligation by sending aid to Haiti."

Close to twenty mosques participated in the fund raising effort. ISCOM will continue to raise funds for the Haiti earthquake relief effort and encourages all Muslims and people of good will to do so. To donate to this effort please go to www.islamicshuracouncil.com.

The Islamic Shura Council of Michigan, ISCOM, was established in 2005. ISCOM is a non-profit organization with the mission of providing coordination between and building cohesiveness among Islamic centers, mosques and organizations in Michigan. The council works for the betterment of all Muslims, to advance Muslim interests, and to promote Islamic values.

ISCOM CONDEMNS VANDALISM OF MOSQUES AND BUSINESSES

Calls on Federal Probe into Possible Hate Crimes

BLOOMFIELD HILLS , MI (1/9/07) – The Islamic Shura Council of Michigan (ISCOM) today called on the FBI to investigate the vandalism of two mosques and five businesses this past weekend in the Warrendale section of Detroit as possible hate crimes. The incidents took place sometime between the evening of Saturday, January 6 and the morning of Sunday, January 7.

Five businesses owned by Iraqi Shi`ah Muslims and two mosques frequented by Iraqi Shi`ah Muslims had windows broken by vandals. The owner of one restaurant reported to law enforcement authorities and the Council on American-Islamic Relations – Michigan (CAIR-MI) that he received threatening phones the night prior to the vandalism that where laced with profanity and making reference to his Shi`ah creed.

"Islam does not condone vandalism or desecration of any house of worship," said ISCOM President Mouhib Ayas. "We call upon the federal government to probe these incidents as possible hate crimes."

Islamic Shura Council of Michigan (ISCOM) Call for the Immediate Release of American Journalist in IRAQ.

The Islamic Shura Council of Michigan calls for the immediate release of Ms Jill Carroll. Ms Carroll, a native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, is a Journalist for the Christian Science Monitor in Baghdad. She was kidnapped on January 7 while reporting on the war in Iraq. In her reports, Ms Carroll described the suffering of the Iraqi people and in doing so she was putting herself at risk. Kidnapping and hurting innocent civilians will help no cause. We stand by her family and pray for her safe return to them.
